Regular oil changes are essential for maintaining the health and performance of your car's engine. Here are the key reasons why oil changes are necessary:

  • Lubrication:

Oil lubricates the engine's moving parts, reducing friction. This prevents wear and tear on the engine components. Lack of lubrication will quickly damage the internals of the engine.

  • Used as a hydraulic fluid:

Engine oil is used to operate components such as Hydraulic valve lifters, Camshaft Adjustment Phasers, Valve Lift Solenoids. Old, worn out, thin oil causes these components to function improperly. Problems like the engine running rough possibly causing damage and the Check Engine Light to illuminate setting fault codes.

  • Heat Reduction:

Oil helps to dissipate heat generated by the engine. Over time, oil breaks down and loses its ability to absorb heat, potentially leading to the engine running hotter than its designed to and engine damage if not changed regularly.

  • Cleaning:

Oil carries away dirt, debris, and combustion by-products from the engine. These contaminants can accumulate in the oil over time, causing it to become sludgy and less effective. Regular oil changes remove these impurities, keeping the engine clean.

  • Seal Condition:

Oil helps to condition the seals within the engine. Over time, old oil can cause seals to dry out and crack, leading to oil leaks and potentially more serious engine issues.

  • Fuel Efficiency:

Fresh oil reduces engine friction, which can improve fuel efficiency. Engines that run on clean oil tend to perform more efficiently than those with old, dirty oil.

  • Engine Longevity:

By providing proper lubrication and cleaning, regular oil changes can significantly extend the lifespan of your engine. A well-maintained engine is less likely to suffer from major mechanical problems.

  • Resale Value:

If you plan to sell or trade in your car in the future, a full service history can significantly increase its resale value. Potential buyers are more confident in purchasing a vehicle that has been well-maintained.

Conclusion:

Regular oil changes are a relatively inexpensive maintenance task that can prevent costly repairs and ensure your car runs smoothly for years to come.

The frequency of oil changes depends. We suggest no more than 5000 miles between oil changes on Synthetic engine oil, and 3000 miles between regular petroleum engine oil. From experience we do not suggest you follow the manufacturer's extended oil change interval schedules, we have seen too many engines damaged by driving too far between oil changes.
